Most New York kitchens do not lose the fight on counter space. They lose it on the vertical plane: a shallow broom closet, a dead corner next to the fridge, a half-height cabinet that holds cereal boxes on their sides. Custom pantry millwork fixes that by building storage to the ceiling and to the niche — not to a stock box width from a national catalog.

Green Cabinets NY designs and installs pantry cabinets and kitchen storage millwork by appointment in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. We are home-based in Bushwick — not a walk-in shop. Samples and measure visits happen in your apartment. For full kitchen runs, see Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. This post is about the pantry itself: when a dedicated storage wall beats another row of shallow uppers.

What counts as a pantry in an NYC apartment

In a Park Slope brownstone, “pantry” might mean a full-depth closet off the kitchen with a door. In a Queens galley or a Manhattan co-op, it more often means a floor-to-ceiling cabinet run — 18 to 36 inches wide — that replaces a wasted niche or sits beside the refrigerator. Both are pantry millwork. Both need adjustable shelves, clear door swing, and finishes that match the rest of the kitchen so the storage wall does not look like an afterthought.

We also build pantry pull-outs inside base cabinets, tall spice towers next to the range, and appliance garages that hide a toaster without eating a whole counter. Those pieces live inside a larger kitchen package rather than as a standalone closet.

Floor-to-ceiling beats another row of uppers

Stock kitchens often stack a short upper over a dead zone and call it done. In a 7- or 8-foot ceiling apartment, that leaves a dust shelf you never reach. Floor-to-ceiling pantry cabinets use that volume for bulk dry goods, small appliances, and baking sheets stored vertically.

    Typical specs we draw:

    • Depth: 12–24 inches. Twelve works in tight galleys; 18–24 feels like a real closet when the wall allows it.
    • Width: Often 24 or 30 inches as a single door, or a pair of 18s so swing stays manageable in a narrow aisle.
    • Interior: Adjustable shelves, one or two pull-out trays at mid height, and a fixed top shelf for rarely used items.
    • Doors: Shaker, slim shaker, or slab to match the kitchen — see our note on door styles for NYC apartments.

Soft-close hinges matter more on a tall pantry than on a small upper. A door that slams from full height wakes the neighbor and loosens the hinge screws over time.

Where pantries fit in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens

Brooklyn. Brownstones and floor-throughs often have a leftover closet or a chase next to the kitchen. We measure for out-of-plumb walls and settle for scribe panels rather than forcing a square box into a crooked opening. If the kitchen is open to the parlor, the pantry face becomes part of the room’s elevation — finish and hardware have to hold up visually, not just store rice.

Manhattan. Co-ops and condos care about Certificate of Insurance, work hours, and elevator reservations as much as cabinet specs. A tall pantry is still cabinetry, not a gut renovation, but we plan delivery and install around building rules the same way we do for a full kitchen. For condo and co-op kitchen context, see our earlier Manhattan millwork notes.

Queens. Apartments from Astoria to Forest Hills often have galley layouts with one “thick” wall that can take a pantry without shrinking the aisle. We watch fridge clearances and the swing of the entry door so the pantry does not block everyday traffic.

Across all three boroughs we install by appointment only. There is no showroom floor to browse; we bring samples to you.

Materials that survive a working kitchen

Pantry interiors see more abrasion than display uppers — cans slide, bags tear, kids pull the bottom shelf. We favor wipeable interiors: melamine or laminate liners, or a durable paint-grade finish. Exterior doors follow the kitchen species or panel line — maple, walnut, oak, paint-grade, or wood-look engineered panels. Longer notes live in our wood species guide and the recent species article.

We do not invent awards or claim design renders are finished installs. Tool previews are labeled as previews. Finished photography sits on case studies when a client allows it.

    Sketching before the site visit

If you want a quick sense of width and height before measure day, the online designer can size a small cabinet run as a layout sketch. The 3D view is a design preview, not a photo of a completed pantry. Full pantry walls get a drawing set after we measure the niche, check plumb, and confirm door swing against fridge and aisle.

Typical timeline for cabinetry: about 4–6 weeks from signed design to install, then a day on site for a single pantry tower or a day-plus when it is part of a larger kitchen. We have been doing NYC millwork since 2009 — 15+ years.

    Pricing language that stays honest

Cabinetry-only planning ranges in 2026 still start around $225 per linear foot for bases and about $350 per linear foot for a full kitchen-style run. A tall pantry is priced more like a tall cabinet line item than like a shallow upper; pull-outs and specialty hardware add cost. Delivery inside our Brooklyn / Manhattan / Queens radius is included. We do not invent “average project” testimonials.

    FAQ

Is a pantry worth it in a tiny galley? Often yes if you have even 18–24 inches of wall that currently holds a shallow upper. One tall cabinet can replace scattered storage and free counter space.

Can you match my existing kitchen doors? Usually close on style and finish. Exact factory matches to decades-old stock cabinets are not always possible; we show honest options on measure day.

Do you build walk-in pantries? When the architecture already has a closet or room, we fit it out with shelving and doors. Most NYC jobs are tall cabinet pantries, not walk-ins.

Will a tall pantry tip or feel hollow? Properly anchored tall cabinets are screwed to structure and packed out as needed. We do not leave a freestanding tower that can rock.

Are design renders finished jobs? No. Renders are design previews. Finished work is photographed after install when the client permits.
