Countertops and Custom Cabinets in NYC: Templating, Install Order, and Timing
Why stone countertops are templated after custom cabinets are installed, how long the gap lasts in a NYC apartment, and how to plan sinks, slabs, and building rules around it.
Most people planning a kitchen in Brooklyn, Manhattan, or Queens think of the cabinets and the countertop as one delivery. They aren't. In a custom kitchen, stone is measured, cut, and installed after the cabinets are already in place, and that order drives a week or more of your schedule. Knowing how it works keeps you from losing a sink for longer than you have to.
Green Cabinets NY is a custom millwork business, home-based in Bushwick and working by appointment only across Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. There's no walk-in shop or showroom; measures and samples come to your home. We build kitchens for Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens apartments, and we coordinate the handoff to whoever is fabricating your stone.
The real install order for a custom NYC kitchen
- Demo and rough work. Old cabinets come out; plumbing, electric, and any wall or floor repair get done while walls are open.
- Cabinet install. Bases are set, leveled, and scribed to the walls; tall units and uppers follow. Fillers and panels are fitted.
- Countertop template. The fabricator measures the installed cabinets, usually with a digital laser template or physical strips.
- Fabrication. The slab is cut, edged, and the sink and cooktop openings are made.
- Stone install. Tops are set and seamed, and the sink is mounted.
- Plumbing hookup, backsplash, and final hardware. Sink and dishwasher get connected, tile goes up, and doors get their last adjustment.
The full measure-to-install picture, including the 4–6 weeks of cabinet fabrication before any of this, is in our custom kitchen timeline.
Why templating waits for installed cabinets
Prewar plaster walls bow. Floors in brownstones and walk-ups slope toward the middle of the building. When we set base cabinets, we level them and scribe the back edges and end panels to whatever the wall actually does. The front line of the cabinets ends up straight; the wall line usually doesn't.
A countertop template captures both. If stone were cut from a floor plan, you'd see a wavy gap at the backsplash or an overhang that changes width along the run. That's also why the cabinet install has to be finished, not almost finished, on template day: every base set, every filler in, the dishwasher opening at its final width, and any panel that the stone sits on fixed in place.
What has to be on site for template day
- Sink. Undermount sinks are traced from the real bowl. Have it unboxed in the room.
- Faucet and accessory specs. Number of holes, soap dispenser, air gap, filtered water tap.
- Cooktop or range specs. A drop-in cooktop needs its cutout dimensions; a slide-in range needs the exact gap and how the top meets it.
- Decisions on edges and overhangs. Edge profile, island overhang for seating, and whether the backsplash is full-height stone or tile.
Seating overhangs on an island or peninsula need support planned into the cabinets, not added after. We size hidden steel or solid end panels during design; see kitchen island millwork for NYC lofts.
Living without a sink: how long the gap lasts
Between template and stone install, most fabricators need about one to three weeks. Stock quartz is usually on the faster end; natural stone you choose slab by slab can take longer. During that window, the cabinets are in but the sink isn't connected.
If you're living in during the renovation, a few things help. A temporary plywood top over the sink base can carry a working sink if your plumber is willing to hook it up twice. Protect cabinet tops and door faces with cardboard while other trades work. And schedule the template the same week cabinets finish, not the week after. More on staying in your apartment during the work is in occupied-unit install logistics.
Slabs, stairs, and building rules
A cabinet box can be broken into modules to make a walk-up landing. A slab can't, so seams get decided by access. A long L-shaped quartz top in a fourth-floor walk-up might need a seam at the corner simply because one piece won't turn the stairs. We design the cabinet joints so a seam lands over a solid partition or a reinforced box, never over an open span.
In co-ops and condos, stone day usually counts as a heavy delivery. Book the freight elevator, have the fabricator's certificate of insurance on file with the managing agent, and confirm working hours, since some buildings ban cutting or polishing on site. Our notes on freight elevator delivery, co-op alteration agreements, and condo renovation rules cover the paperwork side.
Cabinet details that make the stone install go smoothly
- Solid plywood boxes that hold level under a few hundred pounds of quartz; see plywood vs MDF.
- A sink base built for the bowl, with cleats sized for an undermount sink's weight.
- Planned scribe at the walls so the backsplash line stays tight; the same approach we use for bulkhead cabinets in prewar apartments.
- Panel ends finished before template, especially on islands and integrated appliance runs where the stone dies into a panel.
Wood choices for exposed ends and shelves are in our wood species guide, and finished work is in our case studies. Planning a bathroom too? Our online vanity designer lets you lay out a vanity and its top; designer images are layout previews, not finished-job photos.
FAQ
Why can't the countertop be measured before the cabinets go in?
Stone is cut to the cabinets as installed, not to the drawing. NYC walls are rarely straight, and once the boxes are leveled and scribed, the real front line and wall gaps are set. Templating before install is how tops end up with visible gaps or overhangs that don't match.
How long am I without a kitchen sink between install and countertops?
Plan on roughly one to three weeks between template and stone install, depending on the fabricator and material. Quartz from stock slabs is often faster; natural stone that needs slab selection can take longer. A temporary plywood top can carry a working sink in the meantime if your plumber agrees.
Do I need to pick my sink and faucet before templating?
Yes. Undermount sinks, cooktops, and faucet holes are cut from the actual fixtures or their exact spec sheets. Have the sink on site, or at least the model numbers, on template day.
Can a stone slab get up a walk-up staircase?
Often, but long single pieces may not turn the landing. Seams get planned around stair turns, elevator cab size, and doorways. Your fabricator decides where seams go; we design cabinet joints and support so a seam lands on solid structure.
Does my co-op or condo care about countertop day?
Usually. Slab delivery counts as a heavy delivery, so many buildings want it booked on the freight elevator with insurance on file, just like the cabinet delivery.
