A stainless fridge that sticks out past the cabinet face is the first thing a guest notices in a small NYC kitchen. Panel-ready refrigerators, dishwashers, and freezers hide behind doors that match the run — but only when the millwork is built to the appliance's clear opening, hinge swing, and ventilation path. Stock "panel kits" that assume a 36-inch bay leave gaps, binding doors, and a fridge that never sits flush to the shaker line.

Green Cabinets NY designs and installs custom appliance-panel and integrated-fridge cabinetry for Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens kitchens by appointment. We are home-based in Bushwick — not a walk-in shop. Measure and sample visits happen in your kitchen. Start with kitchen installation in NYC and the Brooklyn kitchen cabinets map. This article covers panel-ready vs freestanding, how we size the fridge bay, and co-op or condo constraints. Related: soft-close Blum vs Hettich, dovetail drawer boxes, and painted vs wood veneer in NYC humidity.

    Panel-ready, integrated, and freestanding

Panel-ready fridge. The appliance ships without a finished face. Cabinet doors and handles mount to match the surrounding millwork. Brands vary on clip systems, overlay thickness, and whether the panel is door-only or full wrap. Spec sheets matter before the first cut.

Integrated / fully integrated. Common language for dishwashers and some European fridge columns where the panel disappears into the run — toe-kick alignment, continuous grain, no visible appliance frame. Clients often say "integrated" for fridges too; we confirm the model number before drawing the bay.

Freestanding with a built-in look. Some kitchens keep a freestanding fridge but want flanking cabinets or a false panel that reads continuous. That is millwork around an appliance, not a true panel-ready install — still useful when a board or budget blocks a full column swap.

We draw the fridge line to the appliance you ordered (or already own), not to a catalog module. If the model is still TBD, we leave a clear opening with a filler plan so the final panel does not fight the face frame.

Why NYC kitchens are unforgiving for appliance panels

    • Bulkheads and soffits in condos cut the height a tall fridge column needs — same issue in Greenpoint and Fort Greene condos.
    • Out-of-square plaster in brownstones and townhouses means a "36-inch" opening is rarely 36 inches floor to bulkhead.
    • Freight and stair limits — tall panels and fridge columns need a path planned before the truck leaves Bushwick (freight elevator delivery).
    • Water lines and ice makers pinned to an old wet wall where the new panel run wants to land.
    • Co-op and condo boards that want COI, work hours, and hallway protection before the appliance arrives.

Custom panels start from the clear opening and the manufacturer's overlay and ventilation notes. We scribe fillers on site so the fridge line looks built into the run, not parked in a gap.

How we size the fridge and dishwasher bay

    1. Confirm the appliance SKU — width, height, depth, hinge side, panel thickness limits, and required air gap.
    2. Measure the finished opening after flooring and after any bulkhead or beam — not the old box footprint alone.
    3. Draw door overlay and handle clearance so soft-close neighbors do not collide (Blum vs Hettich).
    4. Plan ventilation — bottom, top, or rear as the brand requires. Blocking airflow to hide a panel is a warranty problem, not a design win.
    5. Align the toe-kick and reveal with the rest of the kitchen so the integrated look holds when the door is closed.

Dishwasher panels follow the same discipline at a smaller scale: height to the counter underside and a panel that matches shaker or slim shaker door language. Freezer drawers and wine columns get the same clear-opening treatment when they sit in the run.

Boards, COI, and living through the swap

Replacing a freestanding fridge with a panel-ready column is still a kitchen alteration in many Manhattan and Brooklyn buildings. Boards typically ask for COI, work-hour windows, hallway protection, and a freight reservation when the building has one. Rules vary. This is not legal advice. You own board submissions; we support with drawings and COI when asked — same culture in condo board kitchen renovation rules and occupied-unit install logistics. Stair-only co-ops get panel and appliance sizes planned for the stair before fabrication.

How an appliance-panel project usually runs

    1. By-appointment measure in your co-op, condo, loft, or townhouse — samples come to you; there is no showroom floor at 10 Montieth.
    2. Design drawings with exact fridge / dishwasher / freezer openings, hinge notes, ventilation, and scribe details.
    3. Building package support — COI and drawings when the board or managing agent asks.
    4. Fabrication — roughly 4–6 weeks from signed design for cabinetry and panels; appliance lead times are separate.
    5. Scheduled install inside approved work hours, with freight or stair path planned before delivery.

Related scopes often include pantry millwork, home office built-ins, and a vanity in the online designer. Designer renders are layout previews, not finished photography. Finished kitchens appear on case studies when clients permit.

    Pricing language without fake testimonials

Appliance-panel cabinetry pricing tracks panel count, finish, hardware, and building logistics — a single dishwasher panel costs less than a full fridge-and-freezer column set with matching tall doors. Delivery inside Brooklyn / Manhattan / Queens is included in our millwork quote. Building freight fees and appliance purchase sit outside that line. We do not invent reviews, awards, or star ratings. Site history since 2009 / 15+ years is accurate. More: About and the blog.

    FAQ

Do you build panels for Sub-Zero, Bosch, Thermador, and similar panel-ready fridges?

Yes, when we have the model's panel and ventilation specs. We size the bay to that SKU — not to a generic 36-inch module.

Can you panel a dishwasher so it matches the cabinet doors?

Usually. We match door style, reveal, and toe-kick so the dishwasher reads as part of the run when closed.

What if my condo bulkhead is too low for a tall fridge column?

We measure clear height after the bulkhead and either select a shorter appliance, split the run, or use a freestanding fridge with flanking custom cabinets. Fighting the soffit with a cut panel is a bad idea.

Do co-ops require paperwork to swap a fridge for a panel-ready unit?

Many treat it as an alteration — COI, work hours, hallway protection. Ask your managing agent early. We bring COI and drawings when asked; you own the board package. See our COI guide.

Are designer-tool images finished panel kitchens?

No. They are layout previews. Real installs are photographed after the job when the client allows.
