NYC kitchens waste storage in two places people stop noticing: the four-inch strip under the base cabinets, and the deep pantry that eats cans behind the first row. A stock toe-kick is a sealed void. A fixed pantry shelf forces you to unload half the cabinet to reach the back. In a Park Slope galley, a Midtown co-op galley, or a Williamsburg loft island, those inches matter more than a catalog upgrade.

Green Cabinets NY designs and installs toe-kick drawers and pantry pull-outs as part of custom kitchen millwork for Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens — by appointment only. We are home-based in Bushwick, not a walk-in shop. Measure visits happen in your unit. Pair this with custom pantry millwork, dovetail drawer boxes, and borough kitchen pages like Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. Layout experiments live in the online designer.

What a toe-kick drawer actually does

The toe-kick is the recessed band at the floor so you can stand closer to the counter. In many stock kitchens it is hollow. A toe-kick drawer turns that band into a shallow full-extension drawer — typically for sheet pans, baking sheets, cutting boards, pet bowls, or flat trays that never fit well in a standard base drawer.

Clearance and flooring. NYC apartments often have uneven floors, radiant heat, or a transition from hardwood to tile. We measure finished floor height and leave enough toe recess so the drawer face sits flush with the kick and still clears the floor when it opens. On out-of-square brownstone floors we scribe the kick so the drawer does not bind.

Where they belong. Best spots are under sink banks (away from the plumbing chase), under a cooktop run, or along an island face. Avoid placing a toe-kick drawer under a dishwasher or where appliance footprints are already locked in a Certificate of Insurance package.

Hardware. Soft-close full-extension slides keep a low drawer from slamming into baseboard or radiant covers. See Blum vs Hettich. Drawer boxes follow the same dovetail standards as the rest of the kitchen when budget allows.

Pantry pull-outs: tall units and base pull-outs

Tall pantry pull-outs. A full-height pantry that slides out on heavy-duty slides brings every shelf into the aisle. In a Narrow Astoria or Upper East Side galley, that beats a 24-inch deep fixed cabinet you climb into. We design around door style — slim shaker or classic shaker — so the pull-out face matches the run.

Base pantry and spice pull-outs. Narrow base pull-outs next to the range hold oils and spices at the front edge. Wider base pull-outs hold cans and dry goods with trays that do not tip when half-loaded. These pair well with appliance-panel integrated fridges when the tall wall is already spoken for by a panel fridge.

Weight and building rules. A loaded tall pull-out is heavy. We size slides for grocery weight and confirm the carcass can take the load. Boards care about work hours, hallway protection, and freight on a full kitchen — same logistics as occupied-unit installs and freight elevator delivery.

Why stock accessories fail in NYC apartments

    • Toe-kicks that ignore radiant heat covers or thicker finished floors
    • Pantry pull-outs sold for 24-inch modules when the clear opening is 22.5 inches after plaster
    • Soft-close slides that bind on out-of-square brownstone floors
    • Tall pull-outs that will not fit the freight cab or stair landing in one piece
    • Accessories that do not match door finish, so the kitchen reads as aftermarket

Custom millwork starts from the clear opening. We cut carcasses and faces to the apartment, then fit pull-outs and toe-kick drawers so they feel like part of the run — not a kit bolted on later.

How we plan these details in a kitchen project

    1. By-appointment measure in your Brooklyn, Manhattan, or Queens kitchen — samples come to you; there is no showroom floor at 10 Montieth.
    2. Storage map — which trays live in the toe-kick, which cans live in pull-outs, what stays in deep drawers with dovetail boxes.
    3. Drawings with exact widths, slide specs, and notes for plumbing and appliance clearances.
    4. Building package support when the board asks for COI or alteration drawings — you own submissions; we support millwork docs. See co-op alteration and condo board kitchen rules.
    5. Fabrication and install — typically 4–6 weeks from signed design for cabinetry, then scheduled install inside approved work hours.

Related: Park Slope, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Fort Greene, Astoria, Upper East Side co-ops. Finish: wood species and painted vs wood veneer.

    Pricing language without fake testimonials

Toe-kick drawers and pantry pull-outs are line items inside a custom kitchen quote. Cost tracks count of drawers, slide grade, pantry height, finish, and building logistics. Delivery inside Brooklyn / Manhattan / Queens is included in our millwork quote. Building freight fees and board fees sit outside that line when the building imposes them. We do not invent reviews, awards, or star ratings. Site history since 2009 / 15+ years is accurate. More: About, case studies, and the blog.

    FAQ

Can you add toe-kick drawers to an existing stock kitchen?

Sometimes, if the base run can accept a new kick and slides without fighting plumbing. Often it is cleaner to include them in a full custom base run. We measure first and tell you honestly.

    Are pantry pull-outs noisy?

Quality soft-close slides keep them quiet. Cheap slides chatter on uneven floors. We specify slide grade for the load and the apartment floor condition.

Do toe-kick drawers work with radiant heat floors?

Yes if we leave clearance and keep the drawer path clear of covers and valves. We measure finished floor and heat covers on site.

Will a tall pantry pull-out fit my freight elevator?

We size panels for the freight cab or stair path before fabrication — same discipline as freight elevator kitchen delivery.

    Are designer-tool images finished kitchens?

No. They are layout previews. Real installs are photographed after the job when the client allows. See case studies.
