Freight Elevator Kitchen Cabinet Delivery in NYC
How freight elevators, COI, and building logistics shape custom kitchen cabinet delivery in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens — Green Cabinets NY. (718) 804-5488.
Custom kitchen cabinets do not magically appear in a sixth-floor Manhattan kitchen. In most elevator buildings across Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens, they ride a freight elevator — reserved for a narrow window, padded by the superintendent, and booked days ahead. Miss that window and the boxes sit on a truck while your install crew waits. Plan it, and delivery feels boring in the best way.
Green Cabinets NY designs and installs custom kitchen millwork by appointment in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. We are home-based in Bushwick — not a walk-in shop. This article is about the logistics that sit between the shop and your walls: freight elevators, Certificates of Insurance, hallway protection, and how we section boxes so they fit. For the broader install sequence see our kitchen installation guide. Co-op paperwork context lives in Manhattan alteration agreements and condo/co-op millwork notes.
Why the freight elevator decides your cabinet schedule
Passenger elevators are for people and groceries. Most managing agents ban cabinet crates, plywood sheets, and tall boxes from them. Freight elevators (sometimes called service elevators) are the legal path — and they are shared with movers, appliance deliveries, and renovation debris.
Typical building rules: freight reservation (half-day or full-day), elevator and hallway padding, quiet-hour windows, and a Certificate of Insurance naming the building and management before materials enter the cab. We treat the freight reservation as part of the project critical path, not an afterthought the day boxes leave the shop.
What we measure before we cut
Stock cabinet brands often ship tall, deep boxes that only clear a suburban garage door. NYC freight cabs are tighter. Before fabrication we ask for (or measure):
cab interior height, width, and depth; door clear opening; whether freight opens on a loading dock, alley, or sidewalk hoist; and the path to the apartment — turns, door widths, and any stair carry for the last flight.
If a full-height pantry or tall fridge surround will not fit upright, we section the elevation into shippable modules and assemble on site. That decision happens at design, not on the sidewalk. Walk-ups without freight get the same sectioning — see Brooklyn brownstone kitchen millwork.
COI, pads, and the building package
A Certificate of Insurance is paperwork most NYC buildings demand before any vendor rolls a hand truck through the lobby. We provide COI when the managing agent asks, with the building and management listed as additional insureds as they specify. We do not give legal advice; your alteration agreement and managing agent set the bar.
Pads and protection matter as much as the certificate. Scuffed marble in a co-op hallway becomes a claim faster than a scratched cabinet door. We schedule install crews to arrive with floor protection and elevator padding as the building requires, and we coordinate with the super so the freight is unlocked when the truck is at the curb.

Borough notes: how delivery actually feels
Manhattan. High-rises and prewar co-ops almost always mean a reserved freight cab, COI, and a tight work window. Upper West Side and similar elevator buildings often want notice a week or more ahead — plan early if your board package is still moving. Borough guide: Manhattan kitchen cabinets.
Brooklyn. Elevator buildings in Williamsburg, Downtown Brooklyn, and newer Condos follow the same freight rules. Brownstones and walk-ups skip the freight cab and put everything on stairs and stoops — we section boxes smaller and carry carefully. Park Slope and similar: Park Slope kitchens.
Queens. Astoria, LIC, and Forest Hills elevator buildings still need freight bookings; some older co-ops have small service elevators that force more sectioning. Astoria lander: Astoria kitchens. Broader Queens context: Queens apartment kitchens.
Across all three boroughs we work by appointment only. No showroom floor; samples come to your apartment on the measure visit.
How we sequence delivery and install
- Measure and design — confirm cabinet depths and tall units against freight and door clearances.
- Building logistics — COI, freight reservation, work hours, and hallway protection notes from the managing agent.
- Fabrication — roughly 4–6 weeks from signed design for cabinetry, depending on finish and scope.
- Delivery day — truck arrives in the reserved window; boxes move via freight (or stairs) into the apartment or a staging area the building allows.
- Install — scribing, hanging, and finishing inside approved hours. Delivery inside Brooklyn / Manhattan / Queens is included in our planning ranges.
Door styles and finishes are covered elsewhere — shaker vs slim shaker, wood species, and the wood species guide. For a rough layout sketch before measure, the online designer can block widths and heights — a design preview, not a completed install.
Cabinetry-only planning ranges in 2026 still start around $225 per linear foot for bases and about $350 per linear foot for a full tall run. Specialty finishes and hardware add cost. We do not invent awards or present design renders as finished photography — finished work sits on case studies when a client allows it.
FAQ
Do you book the freight elevator? We coordinate timing with you and the super or managing agent. Many buildings require the resident or GC to place the reservation; we provide the delivery window and crew size they need.
What if my building has no freight elevator? We section cabinets for stair and stoop carries. Confirm path widths early.
Is delivery included? Delivery inside Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens is included in our cabinetry planning ranges. Building-charged hoist or after-hours fees are separate.
Do you need a Certificate of Insurance? Most elevator buildings require COI before materials enter. We supply it when the managing agent asks.
Can cabinets go up the passenger elevator? Usually no — freight or stairs is the safe default.
Are design tool images finished kitchens? No. The designer and other renders are previews. Finished photography is taken after install when permitted.
