Custom Laundry and Mudroom Millwork for Brooklyn Apartments
Custom laundry and mudroom millwork for Brooklyn apartments — Green Cabinets NY by appointment in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens. (718) 804-5488.
Brooklyn apartments rarely give you a suburban mudroom. What you get is a hallway niche, a stackable washer closet, or a few feet beside the kitchen that somehow has to hold coats, shoes, detergent, and a dryer vent. Custom laundry and mudroom millwork turns that leftover strip into planned storage instead of a pile of baskets and hooks.
Green Cabinets NY designs and installs laundry and mudroom cabinetry by appointment in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. We are home-based in Bushwick — not a walk-in shop. Measure visits happen in your apartment. Kitchen work is covered on our Brooklyn kitchen cabinets page; this article is about the wet-and-dirty zone that usually sits next to it.
What "mudroom" means in a Brooklyn apartment
In a Park Slope brownstone, a mudroom might be a short run of lockers and benches under the parlor stairs. In a Williamsburg or Bushwick loft, it is often a freestanding cabinet wall near the entry that hides a washer/dryer stack and coat storage.
We treat it as millwork, not big-box closet kits. Boxes are scribed to out-of-plumb plaster, depths are set so doors clear radiators and baseboard heat, and finishes are chosen for wipe-downs after rainy sidewalks. Shoe cubbies, closed detergent doors, and a bench with boot storage are common. When the laundry sits inside the kitchen footprint, we match door style and finish so the stack does not look like an afterthought.
Laundry closet vs full mudroom run
Stackable closet. Tall cabinet around a stacked washer/dryer with a shelf for detergent, a hanging rod for drip-dry, and a ventilated door or louver panel when the room needs airflow. Depth is usually driven by the machines plus clearance for hoses and the dryer vent.
Side-by-side laundry. Wider than a stack, so it needs a longer wall — common in brownstone garden levels and larger loft kitchens. Countertop over the machines for folding is popular when ceiling height and plumbing allow.
Entry mudroom (no machines). Lockers, hooks, bench, and closed shoe storage for co-ops and condos that keep laundry in the basement. Still worth custom millwork when the hallway is narrow and stock furniture sticks out past the door swing.
Combo. Laundry stack on one end, coat lockers and a bench on the other — the most useful layout when you have eight to twelve feet of wall near the entry or kitchen.
We do not move plumbing or gas lines ourselves. Machine locations stay where your plumber and building rules allow; we build around verified rough-in.
Moisture, vents, and finishes that survive Brooklyn
Laundry millwork lives next to steam, spills, and wet coats. Paint-grade maple or MDF with a durable enamel is common for doors that get wiped often. Wood veneer can work when you want a kitchen match and will clean carefully — see our wood species guide and species article.
Dryer vents and washers need clearances the manufacturer specifies. We leave chase space and removable panels so a plumber or appliance tech can reach valves without demolishing the run.
Co-op, condo, and brownstone logistics
Many Brooklyn co-ops and condos care about washer/dryer installs, vibration pads, and whether second machines are even allowed. Brownstones may need board or landmark awareness for exterior vents. This is not legal advice and not a substitute for your alteration agreement or managing agent. We plan delivery and install around building logistics — Certificate of Insurance when required, protected floors, quiet hours — the same way we do for kitchens. For Manhattan-specific board context, see our co-op alteration agreement note and condo/co-op millwork notes. Brooklyn buildings vary; confirm laundry rules before we cut panels.
Narrow stairwells and stoops decide how tall boxes arrive; we section elevations to fit, then scribe on site.
Borough notes beyond Brooklyn
Brooklyn. Brownstones, floor-throughs, and loft buildings dominate the laundry/mudroom ask. We measure for wavy plaster, radiator clearances, and garden-level moisture.
Manhattan. Studios and one-beds often only have room for a slim stack closet; larger units sometimes want a mudroom wall by the entry. Co-op rules are stricter — plan paperwork early.
Queens. Astoria to Forest Hills often have a hallway wall for lockers plus a laundry niche.
Across all three boroughs we work by appointment only. No showroom floor; we bring samples to you.
Materials, timeline, and honest pricing
Door styles that photograph well in tight rooms — shaker and slim shaker — are common for laundry faces. Pull-out hampers, tilt-out bins, and open shoe cubbies are typical extras. See also our custom pantry and closet millwork Brooklyn posts.
We do not invent awards or claim design renders are finished installs. Tool previews are labeled as previews. Finished photography sits on case studies when a client allows it.
For a quick layout sketch, the online designer can block out widths and heights — a design preview, not a completed install. Final drawings follow after measure and machine/vent checks.
Typical timeline: about 4–6 weeks from signed design to install. NYC millwork since 2009 — 15+ years.
Cabinetry-only planning ranges in 2026 still start around $225 per linear foot for bases and about $350 per linear foot for a full tall run. Specialty pull-outs, benches, and ventilated doors add cost. Delivery inside Brooklyn / Manhattan / Queens is included.
FAQ
Can you build around my existing washer and dryer? Yes — we measure the machines (or your model numbers) and leave the clearances and access panels they need. We do not relocate plumbing or gas.
Do you install the appliances? No. We build the millwork. Appliance delivery and hookup stay with your appliance vendor or plumber.
Will this work in a co-op? Often yes as cabinetry, subject to your building's laundry and alteration rules. We plan logistics; we do not give legal advice.
Paint or wood for laundry doors? Paint-grade is usually more wipeable next to steam and detergent. Wood veneer is fine when you want a kitchen match and will clean carefully.
Are design renders finished jobs? No. Renders are design previews. Finished work is photographed after install when the client permits.
