Window Seat and Banquette Millwork in Brooklyn
Built-in window seats and banquettes for Brooklyn brownstones and apartments — storage, cushions, NYC install. Green Cabinets NY. (718) 804-5488.
A big blank wall under a window is wasted square footage in most Brooklyn apartments. A built-in window seat turns it into a place to sit, read, and stash seasonal storage. A banquette does the same for an eat-in kitchen where a table plus four freestanding chairs would never fit. Both are millwork measured to the inch — not a bench bought online and pushed against a radiator.
Green Cabinets NY builds custom window seats and banquettes for Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens by appointment. We are home-based in Bushwick — not a walk-in showroom at 10 Montieth. Below: what each piece is, what we measure before drawings, and how the install actually works in brownstones, co-ops, and condos.
Window seat, banquette, or hybrid?
- Window seat — fixed bench under a window or bay, often with lids or drawers, sized to sill and radiator.
- Banquette — built-in dining bench, L-shaped or straight, against a kitchen or dining wall.
- Hybrid — bay seat that doubles as dining when the table pulls up.
All three are custom casework — carcass, face, seat platform, cushion plan — not a catalog bench with legs cut down.
Why Brooklyn rewards built-ins here
Brooklyn layouts punish freestanding furniture: brownstone bays with angled glass and uneven plaster; radiators and covers that eat depth; narrow eat-in kitchens in Park Slope, Boerum Hill, and Fort Greene; co-op and condo freight rules, same logistics as freight elevator kitchen cabinet delivery; occupied installs, see occupied-unit kitchen install logistics.
A built-in seat uses the full wall, scribes to out-of-square corners, and hides seasonal storage under the lid, the same discipline as custom pantry millwork and custom media wall built-ins.
What we measure before drawings
- Sill height and projection.
- Radiator / HVAC clearances and grille.
- Wall plumb and square; plan fillers and scribes.
- Electrical outlets, USB, and switches.
- Table relationship — for banquettes, chair clearance on the open side and knee space under the apron.
- Cushion depth and foam — seat height with cushion on; fabric or leather is usually client-supplied or coordinated separately.
- Building path — stair vs freight, max box length for a long L-bench that may ship in sections.
Samples and finishes come to your apartment by appointment. There is no showroom floor at 10 Montieth.
Design choices that matter in NYC apartments
| Decision | Why it matters in Brooklyn |
|---|---|
| Lift-up lid vs drawers | Lids maximize volume; drawers feel more kitchen-like and need soft-close slides — see soft-close Blum vs Hettich. |
| Open toe kick vs closed base | Closed looks furniture-like; open helps mop and hide uneven floors. |
| Painted vs wood veneer | Humidity and radiator heat favor stable substrates — see wood species for kitchen cabinets. |
| Shaker vs slim shaker face | Matches kitchen language — see shaker vs slim shaker. |
Sectional boxes install in pieces; backrest height matters because dining backs differ from lounge seats. If the kitchen gets new cabinets, lock banquette finish and door style on one drawing set.
Typical sequence for a Brooklyn banquette or window seat
- By-appointment measure in your apartment — photos, radiator notes, sill heights.
- Design drawings — plan, elevations, section through seat and cushion, storage layout.
- Building package if the job needs COI or alteration context; see Certificate of Insurance for NYC kitchen remodels.
- Fabrication roughly 4–6 weeks from signed design, depending on finish and hardware.
- Install — protect floors, scribe, level, soft-close adjust, punch list inside building hours.
- Cushion / upholstery after the box is locked so foam matches the final platform.

Borough notes without fake neighborhood claims
We serve Brooklyn brownstones, walk-ups, and condos — plus Manhattan and Queens. Borough pages: Brooklyn kitchen cabinets, Manhattan kitchen cabinets, Queens kitchen cabinets. Finished work on case studies when clients allow. We do not invent reviews or awards. Delivery inside three boroughs is in the millwork quote; freight fees, board premiums, and upholstery invoices sit outside.
FAQ
Can a window seat include storage? Yes. Lift-up lids, drawers, or a mix — planned around the radiator and sill so storage does not block heat or the window.
Will a banquette fit in a small Brooklyn eat-in kitchen? Often yes, if the wall run and table clearance work. We measure first; some galleys are better with a shorter straight bench than a full L.
Do you supply the cushions? We build the millwork platform. Cushions and fabric are usually coordinated separately so you control upholstery lead time and feel.
Is this only for brownstones? No. Condos and co-ops get the same custom boxes — freight and board rules enter the plan earlier.
Can this match our kitchen cabinets? Yes. Same door style, finish, and hardware language when both are on one drawing set.
