Range Hood and Mantle Cabinet Millwork for NYC Kitchens
Custom range hood and mantle cabinet millwork for NYC kitchens — by appointment in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens. (718) 804-5488.
The range wall is where a stock kitchen usually looks unfinished. A stainless chimney hangs short of the bulkhead. A mantle hood kit lands off-center because the plaster is out of square. The door style on the surround does not match the rest of the run. In a prewar Brooklyn or Manhattan kitchen, that gap reads louder than the cooktop itself.
Green Cabinets NY designs and installs custom range hood and mantle cabinet millwork for Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens kitchens by appointment. We are home-based in Bushwick — not a walk-in shop. Measure and sample visits happen in your kitchen. Start with kitchen installation in NYC and the borough maps for Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. Mantle surrounds, chimney returns, and stainless inserts
Mantle-style wood hood surround. A wood or painted box that frames the hood — often with a shelf, corbels, or a continuous stile-and-rail face that matches the upper run. The stainless or lined insert sits inside; the millwork is what you see.
Chimney return to the bulkhead or ceiling. In many NYC apartments the chase above the range is not a clean rectangle. A bulkhead, plaster return, or soffit cuts the height. Stock chimneys stop short and leave a dust ledge. Custom millwork draws a return panel or tapered chimney that meets the real clear opening — same discipline as floor-to-ceiling / bulkhead kitchen cabinets.
Stainless insert vs decorative-only box. We size the surround to the insert you ordered (or already own): width, depth, mounting points, and filter access. A decorative mantle with no working insert is a different scope. Vent duct path and make-up air sit with your GC and licensed trades; we do not give code advice. Boards and GCs own permits.
Why stock hood cabinets fail in NYC kitchens
- Out-of-square plaster and sloping slabs that pull a rigid mantle off center
- Bulkheads and chimney breasts that cut return height short of a brochure chimney
- Door styles that do not match the rest of the shaker or slim shaker run
- Clearances that change when the insert is swapped after the surround is built
- Freight and stair limits on tall chimney panels — see freight elevator delivery
- Co-op and condo boards that want COI and work-hour windows before demo
Custom millwork starts from the clear opening above the range and the insert SKU. We scribe fillers on site so the surround looks built into the plaster, not parked against it.
Matching the hood wall to the rest of the run
The surround should speak the same door language as the uppers. Classic shaker or slim shaker with careful reveal is a common ask. Finish follows the wood species guide and painted vs wood veneer in NYC humidity. Soft-close: Blum vs Hettich.
When the fridge line is appliance-panel integrated, continue that flush look — matching stile widths and paint or veneer batch. Flanking cabinets, toe-kick drawers or pantry pull-outs, and a custom pantry often share the alteration package. Layout experiments live in the online designer. Designer renders are layout previews, not finished photography — see case studies.
Clearance, CFM, and make-up air — high level only
Hood inserts carry manufacturer notes on mounting height above the cooktop, duct size, and CFM. Prewar wet walls and shared stacks complicate duct runs. Make-up air requirements can appear at higher CFM levels. This is not code advice. Your GC, architect, and licensed HVAC / electrical trades own permits, duct sizing, and make-up air. We size the millwork surround to the insert and clearances you lock with those trades.
Boards, COI, and occupied-unit installs
Swapping a range hood surround is still a kitchen alteration in many Manhattan and Brooklyn buildings. Boards typically ask for COI, work-hour windows, hallway protection, and a freight reservation when the building has one. This is not legal advice. You own board submissions; we support with drawings and COI when asked — same culture in condo board kitchen renovation rules, Manhattan co-op alteration agreements, and occupied-unit install logistics. Stair-only walk-ups get chimney and mantle panels sized for the stoop before fabrication. There is no showroom at 10 Montieth — samples come to your apartment by appointment.
How a range-hood millwork project usually runs
- Photos and rough dimensions — range width, clear height to bulkhead or ceiling, existing duct location if known, insert model if ordered.
- By-appointment measure in your kitchen — samples come to you; no walk-in shop at 10 Montieth.
- Layout and elevations with surround width, return height, flanking cabinets, and filter-access notes.
- Finish and door selection — shaker vs slim shaker, wood species, painted or veneer for steam and grease.
- Building package support when a board asks for COI or alteration drawings.
- Fabrication and install — typically 4–6 weeks from signed design for cabinetry, then install inside approved work hours. Insert and duct work sit on the GC / trade clock.

Pricing language without fake testimonials
Cost tracks surround complexity, return panels, door style, finish, flanking cabinets, and building logistics. Delivery inside Brooklyn / Manhattan / Queens is included in our millwork quote. Building freight fees, board fees, the hood insert itself, and duct / make-up air work sit outside that line. We do not invent reviews, awards, or star ratings. Site history since 2009 / 15+ years is accurate. More: About, case studies, and the blog.
FAQ
Do you build mantle-style wood surrounds around a stainless hood insert?
Yes. We size the surround to the insert SKU and the clear opening above your range, then match door style and finish to the rest of the kitchen run.
Can you return a chimney panel to an uneven plaster bulkhead?
Yes. We measure the lowest and highest clear points and scribe the return on site so the chimney meets the plaster without a dust ledge.
Do you handle ductwork, CFM sizing, or make-up air?
No. Those belong to your GC and licensed trades. We build the millwork surround to the insert and clearances you lock with them. This is not code advice.
Will the hood surround match my shaker or slim-shaker cabinets?
That is the goal. We pull door style, reveal, and finish from the same elevation as the uppers so the range wall does not look like a separate kit.
Do co-ops require paperwork to replace a hood surround?
Many treat it as an alteration — COI, work hours, hallway protection. Ask your managing agent early. We bring COI and drawings when asked; you own the board package. See our COI guide.
